Trekking ยท Mount Kilimanjaro
The Steepest Way to the Summit
Umbwe is the most challenging trail on Kilimanjaro โ short, relentlessly steep and utterly direct. From the southern forest it climbs a narrow ridge between two deep gorges, gaining over 1,200 m on the first day alone, before joining the Southern Circuit at Barranco.
The reward is solitude and some of the most dramatic ridge-line scenery on the mountain. The trade-off is a fast altitude gain with little margin for error โ we only recommend Umbwe to strong hikers with previous high-altitude experience.
- The most demanding and direct route on Kilimanjaro
- Spectacular ridge-line walking between two gorges
- One of the least-trafficked trails โ real solitude
- For seasoned trekkers with altitude experience
