Rift Valley
A Soda Lake Beneath the Mountain of God
Lake Natron is one of the most otherworldly places in Tanzania β a vast, shallow soda lake stained red and orange by mineral-loving algae, stretching across the floor of the Great Rift Valley beneath the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai “Mountain of God.”
Its caustic, super-alkaline waters keep predators away, which is exactly why it has become East Africa’s single most important breeding ground for lesser flamingos β at times more than a million gather here to nest.
- The key breeding site for East Africa's lesser flamingos
- Dramatic views of Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano
- Hikes to hidden gorge waterfalls
- Authentic Maasai culture off the tourist trail
