Overview

Oldonyo Lengai (2870 meters or 9,450 ft), located south of Lake Natron in the eastern Rift Valley of northern Tanzania, is an active volcano known as the “Mountain of God” by the local Maasai people. The volcano’s nearly perfect cone shape and its occasional eruptions make it a fascinating destination for adventurous trekkers. The trek offers the unique opportunity to walk on freshly formed lava and witness the geological wonders of this active volcano. The summit provides a panoramic view of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and the surrounding wilderness. Oldonyo Lengai lies about 137 km from Arusha, a 3-hour drive from the main road between Arusha and Ngorongoro.

Day 1 :

Arusha to Lake Natron

Departure: In the morning, depart from Arusha and drive to Lake Natron, which is approximately 137 km (about 3 hours) from Arusha. This remote area is located at the base of Mount Oldonyo Lengai and is surrounded by dramatic volcanic landscapes.
Activities: Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your guide and a local Maasai guide. Together, you will embark on a scenic trek to the Engero Sero Waterfalls, a stunning hidden gem located in a shady gorge. Here, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the natural pool formed by cascading spring water.
Evening: After the trek to the waterfalls, enjoy a delicious dinner at your campsite and take in the tranquil beauty of the surroundings.
Overnight: Camping near Lake Natron.

Day 2 :

Lake Natron to Oldonyo Lengai Summit and Return to Arusha

Midnight Ascent: At midnight, you will begin the challenging climb up Oldonyo Lengai, an active volcano that stands at 2962 meters (9,681 feet). The trek takes approximately 5-7 hours to ascend and descend. The climb starts in the cool night air, making the ascent slightly easier, although it remains physically demanding due to the steep volcanic terrain.
Summit Experience: Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views into the caldera of the volcano, one of the only active carbonatite volcanoes on Earth. The summit also offers a rare opportunity to witness volcanic activity and see the surrounding landscape from an extraordinary vantage point.
Picnic Breakfast: After spending time at the summit, enjoy a picnic breakfast while soaking in the incredible views.
Descent: Begin your descent from the summit and return to your camp at Lake Natron for a well-deserved lunch.
Return to Arusha: After lunch, you will begin your journey back to Arusha, arriving in the evening. Upon arrival, your safari will end.
