These terms set out how we work, what you can expect from us, and what we need from you. They are written to be read, not to be skimmed — a safari involves permits, remote camps and advance payments, and it helps everyone if the ground rules are clear before you book.
Africa Wandering Peak Safaris is a tour operator based in Kaloleni, Arusha, Tanzania. We arrange wildlife safaris, mountain treks and coastal and island holidays in Tanzania and the wider East African region.
These terms apply to every booking we accept. Together with your written quotation, your final itinerary and your booking confirmation, they form the agreement between you and us. Where a written quotation or confirmation says something different from this page, the quotation or confirmation takes precedence.
All quotations are provisional until confirmed in writing. Prices quoted are held for the period stated on the quotation and are subject to the availability of camps, lodges, park permits and internal flights at the moment we confirm.
A booking exists only when we have issued a written confirmation and received your deposit. Please check your confirmation and itinerary carefully as soon as you receive them, and tell us immediately if any detail — particularly the spelling of names as they appear in passports, and travel dates — is wrong.
The person making the booking must be at least 18 years old and is responsible for all payments and for passing information to everyone travelling in the party.
A deposit of 30% of the total trip cost is required to confirm a booking. This deposit secures park permits, camp and lodge space and, where applicable, seats on internal flights, most of which we must pay for in advance and on non-refundable terms.
The remaining 70% balance is due 60 days before your arrival date. Bookings made within 60 days of arrival are payable in full at the time of booking.
If the balance is not received by the due date we may treat the booking as cancelled and apply the cancellation charges set out in your confirmation.
Payments may be made by bank transfer or card as set out on your invoice. Any bank charges, card fees or currency conversion costs are payable by you, and we ask that transfers be sent so that the full invoiced amount reaches us.
Our prices are quoted in United States dollars unless your quotation states otherwise.
Park entry and concession fees are set by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) and equivalent bodies, and are outside our control. Government taxes, VAT, conservation levies and fuel costs may also change.
If any of these increase between the date we confirm your booking and the date you travel, we reserve the right to pass on the increase. We will always show you the calculation, and we will not add a margin to it. If the increase is substantial you may cancel and receive a refund of any amount you have paid that we can recover from our suppliers.
Unless your itinerary states otherwise, prices exclude international flights, visas, travel insurance, drinks, tips and items of a personal nature.
Tell us as early as possible if you need to change dates, party size, accommodation or routing. We will do our best to accommodate the change, but we cannot promise it: camps, permits and internal flights in Tanzania are frequently sold out well in advance, particularly in the July to October and December to February seasons.
Any change is subject to availability and to any charges our suppliers impose on us. A change of travel dates close to departure may be treated as a cancellation and rebooking.
Cancellations must be sent to us in writing and take effect on the day we receive them.
Because we pay camps, lodges, park authorities and airlines in advance, cancellation charges apply on a sliding scale according to how close to departure you cancel. The scale that applies to your booking is set out in your written quotation and booking confirmation. Please read it before you pay your deposit, and ask us if anything is unclear.
Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru climbs, fly-in safaris and remote western-circuit camps often carry stricter terms than a standard road safari, because permits and aircraft seats are paid for earlier and are rarely recoverable.
This is precisely why we ask every traveller to hold cancellation insurance from the moment of booking.
We very rarely cancel a confirmed trip. If we have to, we will offer you a comparable alternative or a full refund of monies paid to us.
We may need to alter an itinerary at short notice for reasons of safety or practicality — impassable roads after heavy rain, flooding, a camp closure, a change to park regulations, aircraft scheduling, civil unrest, epidemic, or any other circumstance beyond our reasonable control. Where this happens we will provide the nearest equivalent arrangement we can, at no extra cost to you where the cost is ours to bear.
We are not liable for costs arising from events outside our reasonable control, which is again why comprehensive travel insurance is a condition of travelling with us.
You must hold comprehensive travel insurance for the whole of your trip. We cannot accept a booking without it, and we may ask to see your policy details.
As a minimum your policy should cover:
Please check the altitude exclusion carefully. It is the single most common gap we see in travellers' policies.
You are responsible for holding a valid passport, the correct visa and any required health documentation. We are happy to advise, but we cannot be held responsible if you are refused entry or denied boarding.
At the time of writing, Tanzania requires a passport valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry, with blank pages for stamps. Most nationalities require a visa, available in advance online or on arrival depending on your nationality.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from, or have recently transited, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended throughout Tanzania, including Zanzibar. Please consult a travel clinic well before departure.
Entry rules change. Always check the current requirements with the Tanzanian mission in your country before you travel.
You must tell us at the time of booking about any medical condition, disability, dietary requirement, allergy or reduced mobility affecting anyone in your party, so that we can advise honestly on whether a trip is suitable and make sensible arrangements.
Safari days involve long drives on rough roads, early starts and, in some parks, walking in the bush. Climbs on Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and Ol Doinyo Lengai are physically demanding and take you to high altitude.
Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of age or fitness. Our guides carry oximeters and are trained to monitor you daily, and they have absolute authority to end your climb and descend if in their judgement it is unsafe to continue. That decision is final and is made for your safety. No refund is payable for an unused portion of a climb ended on medical grounds, which is again a matter for your insurance.
The animals you will see are wild and unpredictable, and their behaviour cannot be guaranteed. No operator can promise particular sightings, including the Great Migration, big cats, chimpanzees or river crossings, all of which move with the season, the rainfall and chance.
For your own safety you must follow the instructions of your guide, ranger or camp staff at all times. In particular: do not leave the vehicle except where your guide tells you it is safe, do not stand up through the roof hatch when close to animals, do not walk around unescorted in unfenced camps after dark, and do not attempt to feed or approach any animal.
Travel in remote areas carries risk that we cannot remove. By booking with us you accept that risk and confirm that everyone in your party understands it.
Accommodation is confirmed by name wherever possible. Occasionally a camp or lodge becomes unavailable through overbooking, closure or damage. Where that happens we will move you to accommodation of an equivalent or higher standard, and tell you as soon as we know.
Mobile and seasonal camps move location during the year, particularly in the Serengeti, where camps follow the migration. Room configurations, facilities and menus vary and are not guaranteed.
Game drive routes and daily timings are decided by your guide in light of road conditions, weather and wildlife movement. Trust their judgement — they will be working to give you the best possible experience on the day.
Where your itinerary includes light-aircraft flights, strict baggage limits apply. These are typically 15 kg per person including hand luggage, and soft-sided bags only, because hard suitcases will not fit the hold. Limits are set by the airline and are enforced.
Light-aircraft schedules may change at short notice, and flights are subject to weather and to the number of passengers travelling. Where a change to a flight affects your itinerary we will rearrange the ground portion as best we can.
We recommend you keep medication, travel documents, valuables and a change of clothes in your hand luggage.
We welcome families and can tailor most itineraries for children. Some camps and lodges set minimum ages, and some activities — walking safaris, chimpanzee trekking and Kilimanjaro climbs among them — carry minimum age limits set by the parks or by our own safety policy.
Chimpanzee trekking in Gombe and Mahale generally requires participants to be at least 12 years old, and visitors who are unwell may be refused, as chimpanzees are susceptible to human illness.
Tell us the ages of children at the time of enquiry and we will confirm what is possible.
We ask all our guests to treat guides, drivers, porters, camp staff and local communities with courtesy, and to respect Tanzanian law and local custom, particularly on Zanzibar and in Muslim coastal communities, where modest dress away from the beach is appreciated.
We may end the trip of any guest whose behaviour endangers others, causes serious offence, or damages property. No refund is payable in that event, and you would be responsible for your own onward arrangements.
We accept responsibility for arranging the services described in your confirmed itinerary with reasonable skill and care.
We are not liable for loss, injury, damage or additional expense caused by circumstances beyond our reasonable control, by your own act or omission, by your failure to follow the instructions of guides or rangers, or by the act of a third party unconnected with the provision of your trip.
Airlines, camps, lodges and other suppliers operate under their own terms and conditions, and their liability may be limited by international convention.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
If something is not right, please tell your guide or camp management at once, and contact our office immediately. Almost every problem can be put right on the spot, and we would much rather fix it while you are still in the country.
If a matter cannot be resolved during your trip, write to us within 28 days of your return and we will investigate and respond.
These terms and any dispute arising from them are governed by the laws of the United Republic of Tanzania, and the courts of Tanzania have jurisdiction.
