Mount Meru Trekking

Overview

Mount Meru, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and one of Africa’s most underrated trekking experiences.

Located inside Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers a spectacular climb through varied ecosystems—lush forests, alpine meadows, and volcanic craters—all rich in wildlife.

Unlike Kilimanjaro, trekkers on Mount Meru often encounter giraffes, buffalos, baboons, and even elephants as they ascend. With fewer crowds, challenging trails, and stunning views of Kilimanjaro from the summit, Mount Meru is ideal for trekkers seeking solitude, scenery, and adventure.

It’s also a perfect acclimatization hike before attempting Kilimanjaro.

Best Time to Climb Mount Meru

The best seasons for trekking Mount Meru are during Tanzania’s dry periods:

  • January to early March – Clear skies and warm conditions

  • June to October – Cooler and dry with excellent views

Avoid the long rains (April–May) and short rains (November), when trails can become slippery and visibility is poor.
