Oldonyo Lengai Mountain

Overview

Mount Oldonyo Lengai (2,870 meters), meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is Tanzania’s only active volcano and a sacred site deeply rooted in Maasai culture. Located just south of Lake Natron in the Great Rift Valley, it is a truly unique destination for adventure seekers and cultural explorers alike.

Unlike any other volcano in the world, Lengai erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a rare, cool-flowing black lava that gives the summit an otherworldly look. The mountain offers dramatic views, especially at sunrise, when the plains of the Rift Valley and Lake Natron below come to life with color.

Combining raw natural beauty, spiritual significance, and adventure, a trek up Oldonyo Lengai is a physically demanding yet profoundly rewarding experience.
